Argentina's Business Chronicles: Financial Guide, Messi's Influence and Real Estate Insights

Argentina, the Lighthouse of the World

Dear ArgenGrowther,

In the first edition, we learned that Argentina is The Trend; what about now?

Every week, we'll discover Argentina's Business landscape with three main sections:

  1. Financial ArgenGuide

  2. Business Environment & Spotlight

  3. Market Opportunities & Entry Strategies

Argentina's Financials are pretty challenging to follow and understand, so let's go with some starting points (Current data as of 18th Jan 2024):

  • Half the population is poor, yes ~ 50%

  • Minimum wage ~ 200 USD per month

  • Country Risk ~ 2,000

  • S&P Merval (in CCL) ~ 870

  • Central Bank Reserves ~ 24 billion

  • Central Bank Nominal Interest Rate = 100%

  • Central Bank Effective Interest Rate = 171.46%

  • GDP growth 2023 ~ -2.5%

  • Inflation Rate dec.23 = 25.5%

  • There are many exchange rates (way too many), and the most important ones:

    • Official: 1 USD ~ 840 ARS

    • Mep: 1 USD ~ 1,160 ARS

    • CCL: 1 USD ~ 1,210 ARS

    • Blue:  1 USD ~ 1,180 ARS

Financial ArgenGuide: Understanding Argentina's Exchange Rate Policy

Argentina's exchange rate policies have experienced fluctuations over the years, significantly affecting the country's economic environment. Understanding these policies is crucial for businesses investing or operating in Argentina.

1. Official Exchange Rate:

  • The Argentine government sets an official exchange rate for the Argentine Peso (ARS), which is used for transactions like imports and exports.

  • Businesses should monitor this official rate as it can influence the cost of imported materials, products, and services.

  • The current Exchange Rate Policy is a crawling peg with a devaluation of the peso against the dollar of 2% per month.

  • The market doesn't believe - yet - that this rhythm is sustainable in time, so when we look at the futures market, we see that in March, the market expects a ~10% devaluation and another devaluation of ~10% in April.

2. Parallel or Black Market Rate:

  • In addition to the official exchange rate, Argentina often experiences a parallel or black market exchange rate. This rate emerges due to currency restrictions and fluctuations.

Spread between the official exchange rate and MEP.

  • Some businesses may resort to this parallel market for currency exchange, but it comes with legal implications and sometimes some risks.

3. Impact on Business:

  • Exchange rate fluctuations can significantly impact the profitability and financial stability of businesses in Argentina. Sudden devaluations can increase the cost of imported goods and affect the ability to repay foreign-denominated debts.

  • Businesses should carefully plan their financial strategies, including hedging against currency risk when necessary.

4. Government Interventions:

  • The Argentine government may implement interventions to stabilize the exchange rate or curb inflation. These interventions can include restrictions on currency purchases and capital controls.

  • Businesses should stay informed about regulatory changes affecting their ability to access foreign currency.

Key Considerations:

  • Monitor the official exchange rate set by the government.

  • Be aware of the existence of multiple exchange rates.

  • Understand the potential impact of exchange rate fluctuations on your business's financial health and profitability.

In conclusion, the exchange rate policy is a critical factor that businesses operating in Argentina must consider. It can profoundly impact your company's financial health and profitability. Staying informed about official and parallel exchange rates, understanding their implications, and planning accordingly are essential steps in managing currency risk in Argentina.

It is essential to understand how the Exchange Policy Rate works if you want to manage your operations and cash flow in Argentina using hard currency. There's no other way; doing a cash flow in pesos is an unbearable task with an elevated risk due to margin errors being not marginal.

In future editions of our Financial ArgenGuide, we will explore more financial topics to help you navigate the complexities of Argentina's business environment. Stay tuned for valuable insights and updates.

Let's momentarily return to The Trend and consider how Messi's impact has shaped the world.

Inspiration to Youth, a Role Model: Messi's humility, work ethic, and commitment to his family have made him a role model for people of all ages. He is a symbol of integrity and dedication, not only in sports but in life. But that's only a tiny part; his early growth problems and exceptional football skills have inspired countless aspiring young athletes worldwide. He has symbolized what hard work, determination, and talent can achieve.

Economic & Social ImpactMessi's philanthropic efforts, such as the Leo Messi Foundation, have significantly impacted education and healthcare in Rosario and worldwide. Messi's move to Miami generated tremendous excitement among local and international fans, leading to increased ticket sales, merchandise, and game attendance. This action is more than a self-explanatory point of Messi's tremendous impact on anything he does. The MLS has seen his fan base grow like never before. The value of the Inter Miami CF has risen incredibly, making the move to Miami a big financial success for Messi. Jorge Mas, one of Inter Miami’s owners, has already set foot to do business in Argentina to build a gas duct.

Business Ventures: Messi has ventured into various business endeavors beyond the football field, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit. His partnerships with brands like Adidas, Pepsi, and Huawei have boosted his fortune and contributed to Argentina's global brand recognition. In Argentina, and more specifically in Rosario, he has several Real Estate investments such as:

  • Carrasco M is a premium condo in the coveted north of Rosario, with panoramic views of the Paraná River.

  • Azahares del Paraná is a closed neighborhood in Rosario. It's on the banks of the Paraná River, has 80 hectares, soccer fields, tennis courts, and a clubhouse, and is worth more than 20 million dollars.

    Azahares del Paraná

That was just a glimpse of one iconic Argentinian and his global impact; now, let's go to the basics of doing business in Argentina.

Opening Doors to our Business Environment: Exploring Argentina's Real Estate Market

Argentina's Real Estate market has experienced both ups and downs in recent years. Economic volatility, inflation, and currency fluctuations have influenced property prices and demand. Despite challenges, the real estate sector in certain cities remains attractive due to its potential for capital appreciation and rental income.

Let's have a quick overview of Argentina's Real Estate with just 7 points:

  1. Argentina is a country with a high housing deficit.

  2. Mortgages are practically non-existent in Argentina.

  3. The price per square meter in Buenos Aires has declined almost uninterruptedly since the peak of December 2018, which is five years of decline. The bear market seems to have ended, and properties have started to rise.

  4. The construction cost in Argentina has also declined in the last five years but has increased in the previous months.

  5. The quantity of transactions in Buenos Aires has declined in the last five years but has started to grow in the previous quarters.

  6. Temporary rentals are a big boom in major cities as fewer strings are attached in a highly volatile market.

  7. There has been a significant movement towards the outskirts due to the rise of remote work.

The real estate industry is particularly vulnerable to cash flow problems. It's crucial to consider the timing of expected inflows and outflows and the Exchange Rate Policy, especially in Argentina, where things can change rapidly. Despite the complexities, there are opportunities for investors and businesses in Argentina's real estate sector willing to navigate its complexities. Staying up-to-date on market trends, legal considerations, and economic factors is essential for success in this industry.
